An impressive Stratford side had the edge at Moorefields on Saturday and won by 24-12. it was pretty even in the first quarter but a fortunate opening score for the visitors from a charge-down followed by an injury to Leamington fly half James Dunne and a Yellow Card required a major reshuffle and whilst we were sorting ourselves out Stratford scored two more tries through their powerful forwards to take a firm grip on the game . Although we won the second half by two tries to one, we could not threaten their lead. Leam tries were scored by Callum Merrett and skipper Lewsi Kelsey. The Seconds also lost to Stratford by,35-17, with tries from Connor Chamberlain, Ali Weedon and Josh Jones. Adam Mcguigan was man of the match. The Colts went down at home to Old Laurentians by 16-22 with a Louis Harvey try and the boot of Ben Leahy adding the rest.
On a brighter note, the U14’s won away by 36 – 0 at Old Leamingtonians on Sunday morning, scoring six tries: from Ben Keeshan, Harry Freeman, Dom Simon, Oliver Melville, Charlie Main and William Osborne. Melville and James Tomlinson (2) added conversions. The OLs scalp has been added to that of Kenilworth, our other local rivals, and they have now won 5 out of 6 competitive games this season. The team has kicked-on following a player-led recruitment drive during in the summer and a squad of 24 has been assembled bringing in lads from Princethorpe, Aylesford, Arnold Lodge, Trinity, North Leam, KES, Warwick and Myton schools. Players and parents have bought into core values of determination, fitness, discipline, coaching, friendships, rugby skills and smiles. The core of the squad has now been together for four or five seasons with three of the boys being with Leamington since five years young. All the players have blossomed in recent seasons under the coaching guidance of ex-senior players Andrew Keeshan, Bobby Bahia, Guy Stanton & Leigh Melville. We mean business this season. Malvern are flying high on top of the table with 6 wins out of 6 including some very high scores. Their latest was on Saturday when they swamped Evesham 82-18 in the “floodplain derby”. Malvern were promoted two years ago when they dominated the league with Droitwich, playing a brilliant brand of running rugby. They found Midlands 1 a different proposition however and having lost players due to defections and injuries they have come straight back down again, but it looks as though they have regrouped successfully and are favourites for another promotion run. Overall we have only played Malvern 12 times, with 10 defeats and 2 draws the last occasion being in January 2016 when Malvern scored in the last minute to tie the game up at 14-14 when we were down to 13 men.
The Seconds are away at Shottery and the Colts are entertaining Old Leamingtonians. On Sunday the minis are training , the Under 13 are playing Claverdon, the Under 14 are playing Broadstreet and the under 16 take on Berkswell and Balsall
The Second draw fir the 200 club was made on Saturday and the winners were – Roger Wood £300, Bill Slora £200, Tom Daplyn £100 and Mark Partington £50. The Christmas draw is planned for 21 December with prizes of £500, £200, £100 and £50 (2).
