The First XV were back in action on Saturday with a trip to Barkers Butts. The Butts are always strong opposition and this year they had started well with 3 wins out of 3 and were sitting on top of the table along with Malvern and Nuneaton Old Eds. We began well, scoring the opening try through centre Jacob Cole, but Butts played some impressive rugby in the second quarter and steamed into a 24-7 lead at half-time with a 4-try burst. With the slope and wind against us in the second half we were looking at a bit of a duffing but we overcame the elements to get back into the game and win the half by 24-3 with tries from Tom Lane, James Dunne and Dan Barber. It wasn’t quite enough but at least we came away with two bonus points – see John Warner’s report on the website.
The Second XV played Barkers at home and had a surplus of players to pick from, including a few Colts who didn’t have a game. We were much too good for the opposition and won 43-19 with a first half hat-trick by Drew Sinnott more or less wrapping up the game by half time and further tries were added by Stu Campbell, John Brear, Marcin Wisnieski and Adam McGuigan. Man of the Match was James Prince.
The sharp eyed among you will have spotted Luca Illing in the crowd at the England - Australia game on Saturday. The RWC semi-finals are on Saturday and Sunday, kicking off at 9. 00. We are planning to open the Club on Saturday so that you can see Luca again as well as the England versus New Zealand game on the big screen, in full colour (or at least black and white on a green background) and some breakfast - bacon sandwiches etc and morning cocktails - will be available.
Later in the day the First XV are at home to Earlsdon (KO still 3.00). This will be the Earls’ second visit this season as we played them at Moorefields in the Warwickshire Shield on the opening Saturday when we ended their three year hold on the trophy. They have not started their league programme too well, losing at home to Stratford and Spartans and away to Barkers Butts but they beat Evesham on Saturday and might be coming back into form. The Seconds make the short trip to Earlsdon, who have won their last three games against us, so it should be a test of our good form.
The Colts do not have a fixture at this point. On Sunday the mini and junior sides will be enjoying half-term
