In-Touch No 417 – 20 March 2024

Geoff Paginton RIP Dave Inglesent RIP Ist XV Record win Two castles Run Bar staff wanted

Geoff Paginton RIP - Geoff’s funeral will be on Thursday 28 March at 10.00 at Oakley Woods and afterwards at the Rugby Club.

Dave Inglesent RIP – We have been informed that Dave Inglesent has died after a long illness. Dave was a formidable prop-forward who played regularly through the 1960s and 1970s, including a couple of spells in the first team at the end of his career. He was Hon Treasurer of the club for two years between 1973-75. No details have been received at this point.

Droitwich It was a day of records against Droitwich at Moorefields on Saturday. First, scrum half Patch Northover was clapped on for his 300th appearance and then, when the game got under way, he showed that he was far from clapped-out as he scored 2 tries in the routing of Droitwich. Leam scored the first try after three minutes and continued to score every 5 minutes or so for the rest of the game, finishing with 15 tries and a league record points total of 95-7. This just passes the previous league match record of 94-3 against Kings Norton in December 2000, in a season which ended with us losing the promotion play-off game at Stafford. The highest ever score for the first team was in a friendly match against Bletchley in 1993-94 which we won 103-0.

This sets up an interesting climax to the season with Luctonians and Ledbury well clear of the rest. We are on 68 points, one behind Evesham who we play next week. Manor Park are also on 68 points but they have to play Luctonians, who will be keen to keep their 100 percent record . Under the League rules, Luctonians, as a second team cannot be promoted which raises the possibility of the third placed team moving into the promotion spots. We have not been advised how this will be dealt with but the first job is to win against Evesham on Saturday.

Evesham had an outstanding season two years ago, leading to promotion along with Nuneaton Old Eds and they had two comfortable wins against us. They found it tough at the next level and came back down but they have restabilised their position and have been in 3rd place for most of the season. They beat us with an excellent performance at Moorefields at the beginning of December but their results have dipped slightly in recent weeks

The second team game at Daventry was cancelled last weekend. The seconds’ have no game this week. The Colts lost 5-22 at home to Harbury and this week they are at home to Kenilworth on Saturday.
