Leamington Spartans' match against Leicester Lions, late replacements for a cancelled league match against Atherstone, saw Simon David grace the hallowed turf of Moorefields for the last time. Having started at junior level, he has turned out for the club ever since, apart from one year at Northampton, but, at the age of fifty, he has decided to hang up his boots. Whilst the club historian is still doing the sums, in round numbers we are certainly looking at several hundreds of games, with the magic thousand a realistic figure!
Despite the final score, a heavy defeat for Leamington 3rds against quality opposition, boosted, it was rumoured, by several ex- Leicester players, the club gave Simon a good send-off. With several other old team mates pulling their boots on, at times, it looked more like a photo-shoot for Saga!
Whilst the pitches at Moorefields will never see the like again, Simon's feet will, once more, tread the turf, as his service to the club continues in the role of trainee groundsman. He is also looking forward to a few free Saturday afternoons to continue his passions of butter-making and rearing pedigree dalmations.
